How to calculate Fraction

Fractions represent parts of a whole, and performing arithmetic on them requires a few extra steps compared to whole numbers. TutorMeo's fraction calculator handles addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, simplifying the result to lowest terms automatically.

To add or subtract fractions, you must first find a common denominator. For ½ + ⅓, the common denominator is 6, giving 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together: ½ × ⅔ = 2/6 = ⅓ after simplification.

To divide fractions, multiply the first by the reciprocal of the second: ½ ÷ ⅓ = ½ × 3/1 = 3/2 = 1½.

Simplification uses the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). If the result is 6/8, the GCD of 6 and 8 is 2, so the simplified form is ¾.

Fractions appear in cooking recipes, construction measurements, probability calculations, and music theory. Understanding fraction arithmetic is a gateway to algebra, since algebraic fractions follow exactly the same rules. This calculator shows the simplified fraction and decimal equivalent.
